Your Guide to Joining Us at El Lugar!

Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría (SJO) is located in Alajuela, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from downtown San Jose, Costa Rica.

Arriving early, staying after class, or exploring San Jose? Two hotels near SJO airport to consider:

approx. $250-300 USD/night

2 km from SJO Airport

Your class hosts will be in touch via email* with more information including a link to a travel form. Add your airport arrival and departure information so transportation to El Lugar can be arranged.

Arrival date is October 6th, departure date October 13th.

*Look for an email with the travel form link approximately 4-6 weeks before class begins.


The national currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican colón (CRC).
US dollars* are accepted in many places, and you may receive your change in colónes.

Check current exchange rates at Xe Currency Exchange currency converter.

ATMs are available and credit cards are widely accepted. Credit cards with “plus” option allow cash withdrawal.

For ease of payment, please let your credit card companies know where and when you will be traveling.

*You may have additional costs if you choose to pay in US Dollars

The average temperature in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui in October ranges from a high of 80°F (27°C) to a low of 72°F (22°C). Pleasantly warm, humid but cool, with periods of rain likely.

What to Bring:
Note:  keep in mind that El Lugar remains under construction in some areas. 

  • Light layers, to accommodate for humidity and air conditioning
  • Party outfit for the last night
  • Hat, swimsuit, light rain jacket, walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, bug spray (eco friendly please), waterproof mascara
  • Pants and boots/closed toe shoes for horse riding
  • Snacks for your room
  • Sugary/Salty snacks to share with everyone
  • USD Cash for tips:
    We collect and compile the tips for El Lugar staff and present them all together.
    Bring between $150-200 USD for your contribution to the shuttle drivers, room maids, serving staff etc.

This is an all inclusive event, your hosts will be in touch with more information.

Shared rooms only.
Due to the special nature of this event, all rooms will be shared - either by your request or we can match you! 
Let us know your choice of roomie if you have one, on the travel form when you receive it.

Class cost includes accommodation from October 6-13. 
Meals are also included from dinner on October 6 through breakfast on October 13.
 
Arrival date is October 6th, departure date October 13th.
